Mass Communication and Criminal Justice Faculty Explore Career Perceptions in Media

March 25, 2026 By Dominic Carozza

Mass Communication faculty members, Dr. Judy Clemens-Smucker and Jake Portie collaborated with Elizabeth Hartsell in the College of Criminal Justice on a Teaching Innovation Grant and ACE course project researching how student's perception of careers is shaped by their portrayal in media.

On December 4th, the team hosted a symposium to conclude their semester-long initiative, bringing together four class sections from both Criminal Justice and Mass Communication to share their research. Each table of ten students was guided by an ¸£Àû¼§ faculty or staff facilitator. During the event, students presented infographics highlighting their findings to peers from the participating classes.
