Student Conduct FAQs
The Student Conduct process is designed to support student learning, accountability, and success. These questions provide information about what to expect, how to prepare, and where to find support throughout the process. If you received a letter from us, please review it carefully for instructions.
The Student Conduct process helps to support a safe and successful campus community. When information is received that a university policy may have been violated, the university, through the Dean of Students' Office, reviews the information and follows procedures to determine appropriate next steps.
The process is intended to be educational as well as accountability-focused. Students are encouraged to understand community expectations, reflect on their decisions, and learn from their experiences.
Receiving a notice from the Dean of Students' Office does not automatically mean you have been found responsible for violating a university policy.
A notice typically means that information has been received about an alleged incident and that the Dean of Students' Office would like to gather additional information, discuss the matter, explain the process, and understand the student's perspective of what did or did not happen. Students should carefully review all communications and follow any instructions provided.
An administrative review is an informal meeting about a serious topic, with an opportunity to discuss the reported incident, ask questions, and share your perspective.
Before the meeting, you should:
• Review any information provided to you by the Dean of Students' Office;
• Prepare any questions you would like to ask;
• Gather information you believe may be relevant; and
• Plan to arrive on time and participate fully in the discussion.
During the meeting, a conduct officer will explain the process, discuss the information available, and provide an opportunity for you to respond, ask questions, and provide your perspective.
Generally, but not always, the conduct officer will inform the student of findings and sanctions, if any.
Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the conduct process.
Participation allows you to share information, better understand the situation, and ask questions about the process. It's also your opportunity to share your perspective of what did or did not happen.
If a student chooses not to participate, the Dean of Students' Office may proceed using the information available at that time and in accordance with university procedures, and may charge you with "failure to comply" and place a hold on your university account, which prevents you from registering for classes and receiving transcripts, among other actions.
Every matter is unique, but most administrative reviews include:
• An overview of the student conduct process;
• A discussion of the reported incident;
• An opportunity for the student to provide information and ask questions;
• A review of possible next steps; and
• Information regarding outcomes or additional procedures, if applicable.
The meeting is intended to be a conversation focused on understanding the situation and resolving the matter fairly.
Students should review the applicable university procedures regarding advisors, support persons, or representatives that are found in the Student Code of Conduct.
Advisors or support persons typically serve in a supportive role and do not participate on behalf of the student. Students with questions should contact the Dean of Students' Office before their meeting.
As a courtesy, the Dean of Students' Office asks that you let us know who will be in the administrative review with you before the meeting.
The length of the administrative review varies depending on the nature of the matter, the availability of information, and whether additional review is necessary.
Generally, the Dean of Students' Office schedules administrative reviews for 30 minutes.
The university strives to balance resolving conduct matters as promptly as possible while ensuring a fair and thorough review.
Outcomes vary based on the circumstances of each matter and the applicable university policies that are alleged to have been violated.
Many outcomes are educational in nature and may encourage personal reflection, accountability, skill development, and responsible decision-making. Students will be informed of any outcomes and any associated expectations or requirements at the conclusion of the Administrative Review or shortly after it.

Students, faculty, staff, and community members are encouraged to connect students with appropriate university resources when they may need support. Early intervention can often make a meaningful difference.
